Frequently Asked Questions

1) When are your session and event times?

See a full weekly timetable for UNSW Basketball on the Sessions page. Our social events and other events happen outside the regular schedule and can be found on our Events page & Facebook/Instagram too.

2) What are the different skill levels that UNSW Basketball caters for?

We split our sessions into 4 separate divisions - beginner, intermediate, advanced and elite. Unsure of where you fit in? See below:

Beginner often means...

  • I've always wanted to learn how to play basketball.

  • I haven't touched a basketball in ages and I want to brush up on my skills.

  • I know some basics of basketball but I want to know more.

  • I'm mainly just looking to make some new friends and hang out!

Intermediate often means...

  • I play/have played in a local social competition

  • I played high school basketball in organised, structured games

  • I know how the rules, how to do a lay-up and can play in an organised game!

Advanced often means...

  • I played at a high level in my high school teams

  • I have played representative level basketball before with an association/local club

  • I can competently score and defend in different positions on the court.

  • I can quickly learn offensive plays/defensive alignments

Elite often means...

  • I currently play/recently played representative-level basketball for an association/state.

  • I've been to UniGames for basketball before.

  • I am extremely competent at basketball - I'm keen to get competitive and SWEAT!

  • I can dunk and/or am the next Steph Curry from the 3 point-line!

3) It seems like a lot of money to register. What exactly does the fee cover?

When you break it down, it's actually a really great price for all we have to offer; your fee covers you for a whole trimester of playing time and other events, including the two weekend scrimmage sessions, Learn2Play coaching, SheCan sessions if youre a female or non-binary club member, access to join in on pub crawls and drinks at the Roundhouse. That's 10 solid weeks of basketball, basketball, socialising and basketball...!

Once you've paid, you can show up to as many of UNSW Basketball's sessions as you want, trial for Nationals and other external events AND you have access to a very generous bar tab at our social functions - how good is that?!

To put the cost in perspective - to play in a local competition social team in Sydney, the cost is on average $10-$20 per GAME for a 12 week season. If you come to 12 of our club sessions over the term, it'll costs you just $4 to participate each time. Such a bargain!

4) Will I get a receipt after paying my registration fee?

Revolutionise should send you an email with an invoice after you've signed up/tried to renew your membership. The email will also have your log-in details for your UNSW Basketball member account. After you pay the full fee to the account indicated on your invoice, you should receive another email confirming that the money has gone through - don't worry if you don't get it straight away, because sometimes it takes as long as a fortnight for the payment to process fully!

5) How can I get in contact with UNSW Basketball executives?

Message us on Facebook or Instagram, or Email with your specific enquiry or request, and we'll get you in touch with the executive best suited to answer you! Our website has a Contact page too, where you can reach us easily through an automated email.

6) What are UBL & Uni Nationals , and how can I represent UNSW Basketball at them?

UBL

The UBL (University Basketball League) is the offical student athlete elite competition for basketball in Australia. It is a 13-week long competition which takes place from March through to May every year. Selected players from the UNSW Squad will travel to compete in 1 or 2 games a week against other university teams. Players will have access to UNSW's elite athlete program (EAP) support. 2024 will be UNSW's inaugural UBL squad, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media for more information coming about how you can trial to play at UNSW's highest level!

Uni Nationals

Previously known as "Uni Games", Uni Nationals is a week-long tournament that brings together university student teams and athletes from across Australia to compete against each other in all kinds of sport. It's a highlight on the uni sporting calendar. Following the re-branding of UniGames since 2017, the tournament is now known as Nationals and is split into Division 1 and Division 2, although both divisions will commence at the same time, in September ever year.

We will send both a men's and women's team this year after selection trials which will happen in the middle of term 2 2024! If representing UNSW at Nationals is something you'd be interested in, start saving $$$ (as students cover the cost of the trip themselves since it's not subsidised by UNSW Sport) and turn on notifications for our Instagram & Facebook pages - selection events for future teams will go up on social media first. We're always on the look-out for new basketball stars! Head to our Representative Teams page for more information

7)  Can I show up to UNSW Basketball events/sessions without being a member, or bring friends who aren't members?

Of course! We're always happy to see other UNSW students, alumni or staff, but you are required to pay an individual fee each time you show up if you're not a member. It's $10 per person, per session (which can be paid in cash or via car payment) you come along to and you won't be able to access our bar tabs at social events without a membership - other than that, we'd be glad to have you!

8) I want to play basketball but I don't have any other friends who want to join. What can I do?

No worries! UNSW Basketball Club is a great way to make new friends at uni. Just come along to our sessions with a smile, other club members will be super friendly!

Or hit us up on Facebook or Instagram, or head to our Social Teams page and we can link you up with a social competition Facebook Messenger group, which will help you find others who want to play/people looking for individuals to join a pre-existing UNSW Social team. There's always room for new ballers to join a squad somewhere and we'd love to hear from you!

9) I want to play in a local competition. Can you help me?

Head to our Social Teams Page and see our club's social teams! Each team has a contact email or phone number, so you'll be able to reach out to the student player/manager and enquire as to whether they're recruiting new players!. If you're unsure which team you'd like to join, fill out the social teams expression of interest form.

10) How can I get my hands on some UNSW Basketball Merchandise?

Follow this link to see our club's sick merch, produced by local basketball company Throwback !!!
